Graves vandalized in Mayo, Yukon, cemetery

CBC News
More than 18 graves were damaged and some wooden grave fencing was set ablaze at the Mayo cemetery early Monday.

Early Monday morning, RCMP were called to the cemetery in Mayo to investigate reports of a fire. They found more than 18 damaged graves and some wooden grave fencing had been set ablaze.

It was just the latest in a string of fires in the Mayo area this summer.

RCMP Const. Stephen Archibald is appealing for information to help catch the person responsible and put an end to the damage and vandalism.

"Many members of the community are pretty concerned and rightfully so" he said. "It is very disrespectful to desecrate a grave and it is a complaint we are taking seriously and we definitely want to get to the bottom of it."

The Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation is also appealing for information and says the vandalism is an insult to First Nation ancestors.
