Government's financial picture debated

Saskatchewan politicians are debating whether or not the province is on track to a balanced budget for the current fiscal year, following the release of the latest update on government finances.

Ken Krawetz, the minister of finance, said Friday the books will be balanced, even taking into account some $360 million in flood-related costs, about half of which was covered by the government.

To pay its portion of those costs, the government transferred dollars from the Crown corporation, SaskPower.

How the government characterizes its budget has been a topic of debate.

According to the opposition NDP, the province defines a balanced budget based on a limited selection of financial figures.

"This government's been manufacturing a rosy picture that's not a true picture of the state of our finances," Trent Wotherspoon, the opposition finance critic, said.

Wotherspoon believes government debt has gone up by more than $200 million in the past year.
