Twice stolen tortoise recovered - again

Saint John police have recovered Hermann the tortoise, which was stolen from Pets Unlimited on Feb. 1.

The tortoise, which was stolen from Pets Unlimited on Feb. 1, appears to be in good health, Sgt. Glenn Hayward stated in a news release.

The turtle had become a very popular attraction at the store before it was stolen.

It was the second time the $750 Greek tortoise was stolen from the store, located on McAllister Drive, on the city's east side.

He had been stolen about a month prior, but was returned within 24 hours after the store manager tracked down the thief and said he would not press charges if he got Hermann back.

This time, Const. Duane Squires received information that led to the reptile's recovery, said Hayward.

Hermann has been returned to the pet store, he said.

Three males are already facing charges. No new charges will be laid, said Hayward.

Police were called to the store on Feb. 1, shortly after 7 p.m. A store clerk alleged a man distracted him and his staff members, while others in the group stole the $750 reptile.

Three people were stopped by the Saint John Police that night, but they were later released.
