Health care workers stage information pickets

The Canadian Press
EDMONTON - Health care professionals have staged information pickets across the province to bring attention to the state of their negotiations with Alberta Health Services.

Members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta work alongside general support workers who held a wildcat strike last week.

While the association supported the one-day walkout by their colleagues, the union says it is not considering similar action.

President Elisabeth Ballermann says wildcat strikes by their nature are something that unions don't necessarily call for.

She says they are a symptom of frustration among union members, adding she can't guarantee her own membership won't resort to it down the road.

Negotiations have been underway for 10 months and are currently at the arbitration stage, but Ballermann hopes it doesn’t require that process.

Ballermann says the main sticking point is wages.
